Joe joined AFI in 2001 and purchased the firm from its founder as part of an internal transition in 2007. Prior to that, he gained professional experience for 11 years working in roles related to the financial operations of small businesses and non-profit organizations. As president and one of three financial planners at AFI, he supervises work done for all the firm’s clients, as well as working with his own group of clients.

Joe’s particular areas of focus are tax strategies and asset allocation for each client’s unique situation. Joe also serves as AFI’s Chief Compliance Officer.

Joe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington College, where he majored in history and minored in business management. He completed the financial planning program at Georgetown University in 2006.

A native of Villanova, PA, Joe moved to Virginia following graduation from Washington College. He is active in a number of non-profit fraternal organizations, serving on their boards, managing their commercial real estate in Washington, DC, and serving as a member of their investment committees.

Amy Hoffman, CFP®

Amy started her career in Akron, OH, and after several years of working in other corporate and boutique financial planning practices, joined AFI in 1999. Amy was named senior vice president in 2007 and is one of three financial planners on the AFI staff.

Amy has the longest tenure at AFI and enjoys working with many long-time clients and friends of the firm. In her work with clients, she utilizes an education-based approach to create a personalized money experience that provides quality advice with attention to detail and excellent service. Amy is dedicated to providing calm guidance and sensitive insight to help her clients face life’s challenging changes.

Amy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Akron. She completed the financial planning program at the College for Financial Planning in 1999.

Amy has always been interested in career and professional issues facing young planners. An interview with Amy was included in the Kaplan publication, You Are Here: A Guide to Over 380 Colleges & Unlimited Paths to Your Future, in 2008. Amy also helped plan the Financial Planning Association (FPA) NexGen inaugural conferences in Denver and St. Cloud to explore and support career paths for newly minted financial planners. She has been an ethics speaker for the Kentuckiana Chapter of the local FPA in Louisville, KY and served on the board from 2010-2016.

Amy lives in Louisville with her husband, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Bellarmine University. She travels to Northern Virginia each month to meet with clients and collaborate with the AFI team.

Susan Warren, CFP®

Financial Planner

Susan is one of three financial planners on the AFI staff. She works with families (all three generations of some families!) and individuals to tailor financial plans to fit their unique needs. Aside from working with her own clients, Susan is the go-to person for federal benefits planning and takes a special interest in estate planning issues.

Susan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining the firm in 2007, Susan worked for 15 years as a writer for a group of building industry magazines. She assumed her current role in 2009 after completing the financial planning program at Georgetown University.

Susan is a native Arlingtonian who returned to the area in 1998 after a stint living in Zimbabwe and Botswana. She and her husband are parents of three and are recent empty nesters. She is a long-time quilter, an enthusiastic Washington Nationals fan and a New York Times crossword puzzle addict.

Steve Tomisek,

Chief Investment Officer

Steve joined the Advisors Financial team in 2009.  As the leader of the Investment Committee, he is responsible for the firm’s investment research and portfolio management functions.  He also manages the implementation and maintenance of the firm’s internal portfolio management systems and oversees all trading and account administration. 

A graduate of Radford University, Steve holds degrees in both Accounting and Finance.  While at Radford, he served as the Portfolio Manager of the University’s student-managed portfolio group.

Steve lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and two cats.  He is an avid motorsport fan and enjoys attending NASCAR races and waking up at odd hours to follow the Formula One world championship.  In his spare time, he likes to work on cars, ride his motorcycles, and spend time outdoors.

Karen Monborne

Client Service Manager

Karen joined Advisors Financial in 2011 and works closely with the Certified Financial Planners™ as one of our two client service managers. She serves both the planning team and our clients through pre-meeting research, assistance with account maintenance, and post-meeting follow-up, to facilitate our fully customized, educational planning process.

Karen holds a degree in Economics from Williams College and worked for several years as an analyst in a health care consulting firm before taking time off to raise her family and volunteer in the community. She is currently enrolled in the Dalton Financial Planning program with George Mason University and is taking classes to earn her CFP® certification.

Outside of work, Karen enjoys hiking and gardening – she earned her Certificate in Landscape Design from George Washington University in 1989 – and is an active member of her neighborhood book club. She lives in Arlington with her husband in their recently empty nest!

Frances Seay

Client Service Manager

Frances joined Advisors Financial in January 2016, bringing skills from both the legal and nonprofit fields. In addition to working as a researcher for one of the largest law firms in Washington, DC, Frances also gained valuable experience working at the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, Greenpeace and The Jane Goodall Institute in a variety of research, public outreach and marketing roles. She graduated with honors from George Mason University with a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice and International & Comparative Studies.

Outside the office, Frances enjoys spending time with her family, teaching and practicing yoga and meditation, and caring for plants with her green thumb. She is particularly passionate about appreciating the beauty present in nature.
